No. 3 Long Beach Blasts UC San Diego

La Jolla, Calif. - The third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rolled to a 30-28, 30-25, 30-19 win at UC San Diego on Wednesday evening. The 49ers improved to 16-2 overall and 12-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation(MPSF), while the Tritons fell to 6-15 and 3-13 in league action.

The 49ers hit a season-best .562 (52-7-80) in the match, committing just seven hitting errors. Senior Paul Lotman led the way with 18 kills and seven digs while hitting .720 (18-0-25). Three 49ers hit .700 or better in the match as Dan Alexander hit .889 (8-0-9) and Fletcher Anderson .778 (7-0-9). Sophomore Dean Bittner tallied 14 kills and hit .423 (14-3-26).

Jason Spangler led UCSD with 14 kills and Frank Fritsch added 11. The Tritons hit .253 (42-19-91) in the match and had just 5.0 team blocks.

Long Beach also recorded seven service aces on the evening, as Tommy Pestolesi recorded three. Long Beach out-dug UCSD 24-to-19 as Lotman led both teams with seven digs.

The 49ers began the match on fire, hitting .720 (18-0-25) in game number one, winning 30-28. The 49ers closed the match with another outstanding hitting effort in game three, hitting .714 (16-1-21) as they closed out the match with a 30-19 victory.

Long Beach will host its annual Active Ankle/Long Beach Guesthouse Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Walter Pyramid. On Friday at 5 pm, fourth-ranked Penn State will take on Cal Baptist, followed by Long Beach State and IPFW at 7 pm. Saturday at 5 pm, IPFW will play Cal Baptist and at 7 that evening the 49ers and Nittany Lions will tangle in an important match.
