Long Beach State's Misty May Named 1998 AVCA Division I Player of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that Long Beach State's Misty May has been selected as the 1998 Player of the Year for Division I.

May, a 5-9 setter, is the only the second player to receive AVCA Division I Player of the Year honors in successive seasons,  former 49er Tara Cross being the other in 1988 and 1989.

May is a four-time First-Team All-Big West selection, earning conference most valuable player honors the last three seasons.  May may be the most diverse player in the country playing at both the outside hitter and setter position in her four seasons as a 49er.  She has helped Long Beach stay in the top three nationally in hitting percentage the last three years.

She has led the 49ers back to the NCAA semifinals for the second consecutive season.  She became the first player to earn Big West Player of the Year honors in three seasons and repeats as an AVCA First-Team All-American.  The MVP of the Mountain regional tournament, May posted four triple-doubles this season including 16 digs, 13 kills and 38 assists in the Big West Championship against Nevada.  At the end of regular-season play, she ranked No. 12 in the country with a .401 hitting percentage.

The formal presentation of the AVCA National Player of the Year awards was  made today in Madison, Wis., at the AVCA National Convention.
