No. 10 UCLA Defeats DIII No. 2 UC Santa Cruz
Los Angeles, Calif. - Tenth-ranked UCLA won its second straight match Wednesday night defeating the No.2 team in Div. III -- UC Santa Cruz -- in four games at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-20, 27-30, 30-15, 30-25 in 105 minutes before 542 fans. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 12-9. UC Santa Cruz fell to 10-6. All six of UCSC's losses have come to MPSF teams.
UCLA senior Libero Tony Ker reached another milestone, recording his 1,100th dig in Game 2. Ker now has 1,108 career digs, extending his school record. He also owns UCLA's single match digs record of 27, set on Jan. 5 against Hawaii. Against the Banana Slugs, Ker dug 13 balls, his 54th career double-digit digs match and his 12th this season. Ker also recorded his 57th career errorless passing match.
Outside hitters Garrett Muagututia and Sean O'Malley pounded out 40 of the Bruins' 75 kills Wednesday night. Muagututia led the Bruins with 21 kills (.514) and added 10 digs. O'Malley added 19 kills (.484), an ace and five total blocks for 23 points. Junior Jamie Diefenbach spiked 11 kills (.588) and added two aces and three block assists. Ryan Ratelle contributed 10 kills (.438) off the bench.
The Bruins resume MPSF play on Fri., Jan. 7 with a road match against UC Irvine on at 7 p.m. in the Bren Center.
