Agenda
I. Committee Updates

Jeanne reminded the committee that it is important for all committee members to promote AVCA membership among their conference coaches. The more DIII coaches who join the AVCA the louder the voice and more influence DIII has within the sport. The goal is to have 75% - 80% of DIII coaches as members of the AVCA. Assistant coaches and graduate assistants are targets for membership as well. The AVCA will provide the committee with a list of coaches within each conference who are members of the association. This will help the committee target the coaches who are not members. The AVCA can also provide membership brochures to anyone who would like to distribute those among coaches who are not members. Please contact Amanda Brungs at amanda.brungs@avca.org to request brochures be sent to you.

There are several vacancies on the committee particularly within conferences in the New England region. Conferences with current vacancies include the Little East, MASCAC, North Atlantic, NECC and CUNYAC. Please ask anyone who is interested in serving on this committee to contact Jeanne Hess at jhess@kzoo.edu.

Jeanne told the committee that her term as chair will expire at the end of this year. The AVCA will conduct an election for her replacement in September. Anyone who is interested in serving on the AVCA Board of Directors and being the DIII Head Coaches Committee Chair should contact AVCA Assistant Executive Director Todd Hamilton at todd.hamilton@avca.org to get more information.

II. AVCA Report

Jason reported that the biggest project at the AVCA this summer has been the redesign of the web site. Both the database management applications used by AVCA staff and the front end design and functionality are being enhanced. The front end enhancements should be available to members on September 15. This will include a new look and feel for the web site in addition to new functionalities such as a chat feature, job board, rolling scoreboard, a more advanced membership directory and enhanced forums. Currently, members wishing to renew online and/or update their profile are not able to complete those functions through the AVCA web site. This feature has been turned off while the membership data is transferred to the new system. Members wishing to renew or update their profile now can contact Todd Probus at members@avca.org or 866-544-2822. The membership renewal feature and profile update will be available again via the AVCA web site on August 22.

The AVCA Convention will be held December 17 - 21, 2008 in Omaha. Registration is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, August 25. Convention attendees will find several new features this year in Omaha. The biggest change is AVCA Future Star Sunday which includes two sessions of the talent showcase followed by the Under Armour High School All-America Match. Coaches are encouraged to book their flights back home late Sunday afternoon so they can participate in these events on December 21. Other new features include a Texas Hold'em Tournament & Party and a silent auction. NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand will be there to lead one of the more than 60 educational sessions available.

In an effort to increase the quality and quantity of demonstrators at the convention, the AVCA will offer a 50% discount on a full convention registration package and free access to the pre-convention seminar to the first 25 coaches who are willing to be a demonstrator at the convention. Information will be e-mailed to all members about this process the week of August 25.

The minority coaches grant administered by the NCAA will be used this year to provide scholarships to the AVCA Convention for fourteen minority women coaches who aspire to be a head coach at the college level. Anyone who is interested in the scholarship program should consult the convention section on the AVCA web site or contact the AVCA for more details.

The AVCA will offer the webinar "Coaching Strategy in a 25 Point Set: Five Points, Five Factors" at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 20. Former USA Women's Assistant Volleyball Coach and current University of Toledo Head Coach Kent Miller will be the featured speaker. All college members will be sent an invitation via e-mail to sign-up for the session. The presentation will be recorded and posted on the AVCA web site for those who are unable to attend.

The Runza/AVCA College Showcase will be held August 29 & 31 in Omaha. The participating teams are Texas, USC, Stanford and Nebraska. All matches will be shown on CBS College Sports Network.

AVCA Senior Director of Membership and Events, Mark McCloskey, left the AVCA in July to pursue some club and high school coaching opportunities. Amanda Brungs has joined the AVCA staff as Membership and Awards Specialist and will be primarily focused on membership recruitment and retention.

Anyone who is a regional awards chair should confirm their committees as soon as possible and contact AVCA Awards Manager Ashley Beil (ashley.beil@avca.org) with the committee list.

All coaches should remind their SIDs to update the web site after matches. The AVCA gets many stories from school web sites so timely information is critical.

III. Collegiate Sand Volleyball Update

Kathy DeBoer gave an update on the status of collegiate sand volleyball. Sand volleyball was endorsed unanimously by the CWA and has been declared an emerging sport for women. DI and DII will be considering the sport as part of their legislative debates this year. Discussion will include playing dates, season dates, team formats, ect. Once these parameters are set DIII will have a model in place if the division decides to move forward with the sport. The committee is asked to conduct research within their conferences to gauge the interest level and increase the awareness of sand volleyball.

IV. Spring Board Meeting Report

Jeanne reported that the board meeting held in May went well and was very productive. Among the news items from the meeting are the following:

· a 3-year agreement was reached between the AVCA and Junior Volleyball Directors Association (JVDA) to continue their partnership

· the AVCA now has seven high school affiliate states and that number continues to grow

· each DIII region will now have 14 All-Americans

· each DIII All-American Team (first, second, third) will now consist of 14 players

V. Old Business

As part of the AVCA web site redesign, there will be a microsite developed for the Dig for the Cure campaign. This microsite should be available in October and will contain information about the cause and resources for holding your own events. In addition, the feature story in the Oct/Nov edition of Coaching Volleyball will be on Dig for the Cure.

The game management survey will go out to DIII coaches within the next week. The survey will contain questions on match management as well as the support coaches get for their program. Please encourage all of your conference coaches to participate. The results will be available at the AVCA Convention.

Coaches should submit a list of their Web cast matches to Leah Brock (leah.brock@avca.org). This list can be found on the AVCA web site.

VI. New Business

The AVCA Salary Survey will go out to all member coaches in September. Please watch your e-mail for the survey and encourage your conference coaches to participate.

The committee was asked to think about what they would like to accomplish this year as a group and submit those ideas to Jeanne (jhess@kzoo.edu). She will put them on the agenda for discussion at future meetings.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:50 a.m. ET. The next Division III Head Coaches Committee conference call will be held at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, September 8.
