I. Committee Member Terms

The term of DIII Head Coaches Committee members runs from August - May. Jeanne asked that anyone on the current committee who no longer wishes to serve to e-mail her so a replacement can be found.

II. AVCA Report

Jason reported that Ashley Beil has been hired as the new Awards Coordinator for the AVCA. Ashley played volleyball at Hanover College in Indiana and recently graduated with a master's degree in sports administration. Ashley began her new position on March 3. Coaches who have questions about any of the AVCA awards programs should contact Ashley at AVCA headquarters.

The nomination deadline for the Grant Burger Media Award is May 5. Any coach who is aware of a media person that has made a significant contribution to volleyball is asked to submit a nomination. The nomination period for the Team Academic Award will be June 2 - 30. Please contact Ashley Beil with questions about the nomination process for both awards.

AVCA Editor Rick Capone has asked that any coach who is interested in writing a technical article for Coaching Volleyball magazine to please contact him at rick.capone@avca.org. The AVCA encourages DIII coaches to become more involved in writing for AVCA publications. Rick is open to discuss any article idea that a DIII coach would like to submit.

The AVCA has started the process of redesigning the association Web site. The redesign will provide a new look and feel as well as add some new functions. The goal is to have the redesign completed by early August. The AVCA was able to move forward with this project due to its relationship with IMG. The resources IMG was able to provide allowed the project to be completed at a significantly reduced cost.

The AVCA Convention will be held December 17 - 21 in Omaha, Nebraska. Registration is scheduled to open on August 18. All coaches are encouraged to put these dates on their calendars and make plans to attend. More details will be distributed in early August.

III. AVCA Issues Report

The AVCA Board of Directors sent a memo to the NCAA regarding the recent rules changes. The NCAA has yet to respond to the memo. When the AVCA receives the response that message will be sent out to all AVCA members via e-mail and will also be distributed in AVCA At The Net. In addition, some conferences have sent a memo to the NCAA about the rules change process. Going forward the AVCA will offer a venue for rules discussion at future conventions. The AVCA will also be providing education over the next few months for coaches on the rule change of playing to 25 points. There has been no final decision yet on NAIA, Two-Year and Men changing to the 25 point rule.

Jeanne gave a collegiate beach update and mentioned that currently DIII has only one date of competition in the spring while DI gets four dates. The DIII rule of one spring competition date makes it difficult for schools to become involved in collegiate beach volleyball. The goal for DIII is to get another date added to spring competition. Any coach who believes their conference would be willing to sponsor legislation to add another spring competition date should contact Kathy DeBoer at Kathy.deboer@avca.org.

IV. Awards Discussion

The committee discussed a memo submitted by Danny Miller that addresses the DIII Honorable Mention All-American selection and criteria. Currently, the DIII All-American Committee selects 36 players broken down into three All-American teams. Everyone else who made one of eight regional teams was named an Honorable Mention All-American. Some coaches feel this process makes the naming of honorable mention players watered down and less significant while other coaches feel it is important to recognize as many players as possible. The committee had a lengthy discussion on this topic and no consensus was reached. The group asked Danny to research how other sports in DIII name their honorable mention players and then communicate the results back to the committee via e-mail. Based on the responses Danny receives via e-mail he will make a recommendation to the DIII All-American Committee. All HCC members are asked to contact their conference coaches and get feedback that can be shared with Danny.

V. Old Business

Jeanne asked all coaches to work with their conferences and schedule a match this fall that will raise money and/or awareness for the Dig for Cure campaign.

Any coach interested in presenting at the AVCA Convention in December can still submit an application to present. The application is located in the convention section of the AVCA Web site. Please send the application to Jason Jones at AVCA headquarters by April 25.

Becky Schmidt reported the game management survey will be up in early May.

The AVCA will again work with the DIII Web casting Subcommittee on developing a schedule of DIII matches to highlight on the AVCA Web site in the fall. If you have a match you would like to be considered for this project please contact Dianna Graves or Jeanne Hess. Also, coaches are encouraged to send a list of your Web cast matches to Leah Brock at leah.brock@avca.org. Leah will develop a master schedule that will be posted on the AVCA Web site.

The AVCA Board of Directors will be meeting in Lexington, KY May 4 - 6. Jeanne asked that committee members please send her any items you would like her to bring up during the meeting.

Dianna Graves is working on a project to gather rosters of volleyball players with their contact information. She will then distribute these lists to players in different parts of the world who want to get together and play. Please contact Dianna if you would like to participate in this project or have names to add to the rosters.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:13 p.m. ET. The next Division III Head Coaches Committee conference call will be held at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, August 11.
