No. 7 Florida Southern's Home Mastery of No. 4 Tampa Continues
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Jenkins Field House magic continues for the Moccasins against arch-rival Tampa. For the fourth straight year, the Moccasins won at home over the Spartans, claiming a 25-23, 25-23, 29-27 victory Wednesday night in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams. The win, FSC's fifth straight, improved the seventh-ranked Moccasins' record to 10-2, while Tampa suffered its first loss in 10 matches.
Danielle Higginbotham led the Moccasins with 18 kills and hit .444 for the match. Danielle Durham posted her sixth double-double of the season and 41st of her career with 10 kills and 14 digs. Courtney Johnson matched her career high with 18 digs. Coming into the match with a .310 hitting percentage, Tampa hit just .159.
The Moccasins overcame an early 13-7 deficit in the first set. Anna Greenwood's kill broke an 18-18 tie and FSC led the rest of the set. In set two, Tampa grabbed an early 5-0 lead, but with the scored tied at 23-23, the Moccasins won the set on back-to-back aces by Elise Burke. In the final set, a kill by Higginbotham tied the score at 27-27, then her block gave FSC the lead before Greenwood's kill ended the match in front of 687 fans.
Friday the Moccasins tackle another nationally-ranked team, as fifth-ranked West Texas A&M will visit Jenkins Field House for a 7 p.m. match.
