Sam Tortorello, a 5-11 senior setter for fourth-ranked Penn State University (13-2, 4-0 Big Ten), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after leading the Nittany Lions to two Big Ten sweeps on a .338 combined team attack percentage. She averaged 14.8 assists, 1.42 points, 0.83 blocks, 2.17 digs and 0.50 kills per game. Tortorello paced the Nittany Lions to a .284 attack percentage against 18th-ranked Ohio State with 43 assists, five digs, three blocks and two kills. She ignited the PSU offense to a .393 team attack percentage versus Indiana with 46 assists, eight digs and two blocks. At least three Nittany Lions reached double-figures kills in each match. Tortorello averages 13.3 assists, 0.63 blocks, 2.73 digs and 0.75 kills per game on the season. Tortorello is the second Nittany Lion to receive the honor as Syndie Nadeau earned it on Nov. 8, 2004.
