No. 15 Volleydons Come Up "Aces" in Sweep of Quincy

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The No. 15 IPFW Men's Volleyball team broke a school record for aces in a match with 15 in a 3-0 sweep of Quincy University in MIVA action, Saturday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

The Mastodons swept through the Hawks by the scores of 30-8, 30-26, and 30-17.

The win improves IPFW's overall record to 8-6, while evening their MIVA record at 3-3.

The 'Dons did most of their ace damage in the opening game. Freshman outside hitter Darryl Shank ran off six straight points, including three consecutive aces.

Senior outside hitter Brock Ullrich followed that up later in the game with seven straight points, including four aces in the string.

Quincy shook off the opening game blitz and played well in the second game, tying it at 16 on a kill by Robbie Coughlin.

Senior middle Steve Rogers opened the 'Dons lead back to six with a pair of kills, making it 25-19. From there, IPFW was content to trade points to take the second game, 30-26.

In Game 3, senior outside hitter C.J. Macias joined the ace club. He fired off four, three-in-a-row at one stretch, as IPFW finished the match off, 30-17.

Ullrich and freshman opposite Ben Duckworth paced the offense with seven kills each.

The 'Dons hit .435, while the Hawks hit just .053.

Quincy was led by Ed Ryan with a match-high eight kills.

The Mastodons will return to MIVA action next weekend, hosting Ball State on Friday night and Ohio State on Saturday. Both matches tip at 7:00 p.m.

Note: IPFW's previous high for aces in a game was 13 vs. George Mason in 1993.
