I. Membership Update
During the committee meeting in August the group set a goal of having 80% of DIII head coaches as members of the AVCA. Currently, about 75% of DIII head coaches are members of the association. Jeanne reminded the group to continue to push membership to the coaches in their conference who are not members. Jason mentioned that membership brochures are available to anyone who needs them to assist with the membership drive. Coaches can contact Jason at firstname.lastname@example.org to request brochures.
II. NCAA Rules Survey
Kerry Carr, Chair of the Rules Committee, spoke to the group about a survey that was sent out to AVCA members. The survey asked questions about several of the hot topics in the sport including on-court warm-up time protocol for the home and visiting team, the double hit call, and making a change from a 30 to a 25 point game. Kerry encouraged all coaches to provide their feedback on the survey as her committee will use this information when considering rule changes at the January meeting.
Lisa Gallagher mentioned that another hot topic regarding rules was when compiling statistics in a 5 point match to divide by 4.5 because the final game only goes to 15. Currently, volleyball stats in a 5 point match are figured by dividing by 5. The proposal to divide by 4.5 had been brought up in the past but did not have enough support. The group briefly discussed the merits of the change and the concern of how it might impact the historical significance of statistics.
III. AVCA Report
Jason reminded the committee that the convention early registration discount deadline is coming up on November 2. He encouraged all coaches to register by that date in order to save up to $150 off their convention registration. Jason also reported that the match times have now been determined by the NCAA. The semifinals will be held at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. PT on Thursday, December 13. The championship match is set for 6 p.m. PT on Saturday, December 15.
The next DIII Web Cast Match of the Week is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 16 featuring Redlands @ La Verne. The link to the Web cast will be available on AVCA Web site home page.
The annual Salary Survey of DIII head coaches was sent to members via e-mail on October 5. The deadline for participating in the survey is October 19. Jason encouraged all DIII head coaches to participate as only those coaches who respond will be sent the survey results.
Please remember to submit nominations for the DIII Player of the Week to DIII@avca.org or email@example.com. The AVCA would like to increase the number of nominations received each week.
Award packets have been e-mailed to all DIII head coaches and SIDs. These packets have all of the deadlines and nomination forms needed for post season awards. This information is also available in the awards section on the AVCA Web site. Some of the key upcoming deadlines are as follows:
· October 24: Nominations for Region Coach of the Year
· October 26 beginning at 9 a.m. ET - October 29 ending at 6 p.m. ET: Nominations for Region Player of the Year
· November 9: Nominations for the Victory Club Award
October is breast cancer awareness month and the AVCA has posted information on its Web site that offers some fundraising ideas to anyone who would like to become involved.
IV. Legislative Follow-up
The committee had some follow-up discussion on the interpretation TJ Meagher presented during the September meeting on the following bylaw:
"The use of a member institution's facilities for physical activities by a group that includes prospective student-athletes shall not be considered a tryout, provided the institution's athletics department staff members or representatives of its athletics interests are not involved in the conduct, promotion or administration of the activity (other than activities incidental to supervising the use of the facilities) and are subject to all applicable NCAA recruiting legislation."
Several of the committee members had contacted their conferences for clarification or looked at other options available but had limited success. One option could be to have the President of the school add a line to the job description of the head coach indicating the coach must be involved in the operations of any fundraisers or tournaments that involve volleyball. The committee will continue to research this topic and look for options.
V. Convention Meeting Agendas
Jeanne did a roll call to determine who was planning to attend the convention. She asked that any committee member who is not planning to attend should try to find another coach from their conference who can attend the meetings. In addition, Jeanne asked for any suggestions on agenda items for the DIII convention meetings. The committee is encouraged to submit any ideas they have for convention agenda items to Jeanne.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:42 a.m. ET. The next conference call is scheduled for Monday, November 12 at 11 a.m. ET.
