No. 5 Pepperdine Defeats No. 8 Southern California in Four
Los Angeles, Calif. - fifth-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team received 26 kills from junior opposite Paul Carroll and rallied to win at eighth-ranked USC in four games (24-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-26) in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Friday night at the Galen Center.
The Waves won their third straight match since Carroll returned from a hand injury and improved to 8-5 overall and 8-5 in the MPSF. USC dropped to 9-9, 6-7.
Carroll (Forster, Australia), a returning All-American first teamer, hit .488 on 41 swings and added seven block assists. Senior setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), last season's national player of the year, had 50 assists and directed Pepperdine to a .424 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) had 13 kills while junior middle blocker Eric Liebert (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) had 10 kills and six block assists.
The Trojans led 24-20 in game four, but Pepperdine scored the next four points to tie it at 24-24. Trailing 26-25, Carroll rattled off three straight kills, Liebert had another and Pepperdine then closed the match out on a USC attack error.
The Waves held the Trojans to a .228 hitting percentage.
The Waves next play two matches at BYU next Friday and Saturday (March 7-8).
