Kristin Nelson, a 5-9 senior libero for 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (21-3, 15-2 Big West), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after leading the Gauchos to victories over Long Beach State and UC Irvine. Nelson, the first-ever libero to earn the national honor, averaged 8.60 digs, 0.38 assists and 0.12 aces per game in helping UC Santa Barbara clinch the Big West Conference title. She produced 35 digs (eighth most in school history), three assists and an ace against Long Beach State on Nov. 12 as the Gauchos hit .222 in four games. Nelson added 34 digs in four games versus UC Irvine. She became the school's all-time career digs leader with 1,651 this past weekend. UC Santa Barbara has won 11 matches in a row, and Nelson has tallied at least 30 digs in four of the past five matches. She is the fifth Gaucho player in school history to earn the national award. The UC Santa Barbara head coach is Kathy Gregory.
