AJ Nally - Springfield College
2010 AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Year
KENOSHA, Wis. (April 15, 2010) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced this evening that Springfield College senior outside hitter AJ Nally was named the 2010 AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Year.
The presentation was made at the Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship Banquet in Kenosha, Wis. The banquet was held in conjunction with the Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship, to be played April 16-17 in Tarble Arena on the campus of Carthage College.
Nally has led Springfield to a 17-10 record thus far in 2010, which includes 10 victories over Division I opponents. In addition, the Pride, with the assistance of Nally, rung up a 7-2 mark against Division III institutions, with five of those wins coming over nationally-ranked teams. He helped Springfield remain one of the elite Division III programs, as it held the top-spot in the AVCA Men's Division III Coaches Top 15 Poll for two weeks during the season, and the squad never dropped lower than No. 3 in the rankings.
The senior phenom has consistently ranked among the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) and national statistical leaders this season with a 4.08 kills per game average. His 256 digs on the year allowed him to set a new program record for career digs, and he has turned in 12 double-double performances this campaign. An all-around asset for the program, Nally helped Springfield earn the EIVA's berth into Friday's Molten Invitational semifinals as the tournament's No. 2 seed.
A Rochester, N.Y. native, Nally was imperative to the Maroon & White's success the past four seasons. During his time in a Pride uniform, Springfield compiled a 70-37 record and captured its fifth Molten Invitational title in 2008.
In addition to being named an AVCA Men's Division III First-Team All-American earlier this week, Nally was also tabbed the AVCA Newcomer of the Year in 2007, a year in which he earned an AVCA Second-Team All-America mention. The accolades don't stop there, as Nally was a four-time EIVA Division III All-Star and recently named the EIVA Division III Player of the Year.
In the seven-year history of the AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Year award, Nally becomes the first athlete from Springfield to be heralded with the prestigious honor. He joins Matt Werle, Ricky Ziegler and Kenny Eiser, all from Juniata, Andrew Cranford from Stevens, Bryan Shires from UC Santa Cruz and Chris Schmidt from NYU as the only recipients of the award.
