AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year

Shelton Collier - Wingate University
Heather Roberts - Colorado School of Mines

SEATTLE, Wash. (December 19, 2013) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that Wingate University Head Women's Volleyball Coach Shelton Collier has been selected as the 2013 AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year, while Colorado School of Mines Assistant coach Heather Roberts has been named the AVCA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year.

It was another historic run for the Collier-led Bulldogs, winning their eighth consecutive Southern Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles. They cracked the top-10 of the AVCA Coaches Poll for the first time in program history in the week of October 28th when they checked in at No. 9. They opened the season at No. 21 and have climbed steadily through the polls for the duration of the season. Wingate's .941 winning percentage ties them for fourth in the nation with Armstrong Atlantic.

He mentored the conference's first ever AVCA First-Team All-American in Anna Hilton as well as second-teamer Lexi Potter and honorable mention Alison Cooke. Hilton became just the third player in SAC history to garner back-to-back conference player of the year honors. Three of the top players in hitting percentage were all Bulldogs: Potter (.375), Allison Rickher (.364) and Hilton (.353).

They earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing all of the way to the national quarterfinals defeating Belmont Abbey, Anderson (S.C.) and Armstrong Atlantic. It was their ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Roberts, in her sixth season as an assistant coach, has done nothing but win in her time at the Colorado School of Mines. Back in 2009, Roberts helped guide the Orediggers to their second-ever NCAA post-season appearance and have made the tournament every year since. A 2012-2013 AVCA Thirty Under 30 Recipient, she serves as the recruiting and defensive coordinator that helped replace six seniors off the 2012 RMAC Championship squad. She also serves as a Life Group Leader at Red Rocks Church.

The AVCA formally presented their awards at the 2013 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Seattle, Washington earlier today. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the 2013 AVCA Annual Convention.
