Paula Ferreira - Columbia College (MO)
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 6, 2012) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Columbia College (MO) senior setter Paula Ferreira as the 2012 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year.
The senior from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil is no stranger to this award, having won it in 2010 as a sophomore. Coincidence or not, the Cougars have achieved similar success finishing the season as the NAIA National Runner-up. She becomes the second player in program history to win the AVCA/NAIA National Player of the Year multiple times (Yang Zhe, 1997 + 1998).
Ferreira has built up quite an overwhelming resume in four years at Columbia: two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete, four-time AMC Setter of the Year, three-time AMC Player of the Year, four-time First Team All-Conference, three-time Academic All-Conference, three-time NAIA First Team All-American, three-time NAIA National Tournament all-tournament team, 2012 NAIA National Tournament MVP, 2009 NAIA Third Team All-American and 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division Volleyball Player of the Year.
In 2012, she racked up an astounding 6,280 assists, including 1,766 this season, which is the third highest single-season assist total in Cougar history. She ended this year's campaign leading the nation in assists per set with 12.18. However, she was able to start and end many points without the help of her teammates, tallying 82 service aces this season to give her 245 in her career...another program record.
The formal presentation of the 2012 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year will be made Dec. 14 in Louisville, Kentucky at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championships.
