OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (December 18, 2014) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Park University Head Women's Volleyball Coach Mike Talamantes has been selected as the 2014 AVCA NAIA National Coach of the Year, while Concordia University Irvine Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach Brett Gillen has been tabbed as the 2014 AVCA NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year.

It was one of the all-time great seasons that will go down in the record books for the Park University Women's Volleyball Team. That's not a stretch to say when they finished the season a perfect 40-0 culminating in their first ever NAIA National Championship in women's volleyball. They knocked off the reigning national champs Texas at Brownsville in straight sets with outside hitter Wendy Romero winning the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The American Midwest Conference and AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year just concluded his fourth year at the helm of the both the women's and men's programs. In 2012, he won the NAIA Men's Championship and the AVCA NAIA Men's Coach of the Year honor. He mentored three players to AVCA NAIA All-American status in 2014 with Romero, setter Juliana Barros, and right side Wanessa Siqueira.

The Pirates ended the season ranking in the top-5 nationally in team hitting percentage (.305), kills per set (14.1), assists per set (13.0) and service aces per set (2.3). They dominated their opponents with 35 of their 40 victories coming as sweeps with just one five-set match.

Gillen, in his second year as an assistant coach for Concordia University Irvine, has been instrumental to the program's success. The Eagles finished this year's campaign with a 34-4 record making it to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National tournament. Earlier this year, Gillen was selected an AVCA Thirty Under 30 recipient. Back in 2013, he was the head men's assistant when Concordia (CA) won the NAIA National Championship.

The AVCA formally presented both coaches their awards at the 2014 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Thursday, December 18. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2014 AVCA Annual Convention
