Ben Patch, a 6-8 freshman outside hitter for No. 2 BYU, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. Patch helped lead the Cougars to a perfect weekend at home with wins over then-No. 14 Pacific and then-No. 5 Stanford. In their first match of the weekend against the Tigers, the local Provo native smashed a match-high 13 kills with a .417 hitting percentage to go along with his three blocks. Up next was the Cardinal, who the Cougars haven't defeated in the last six tries dating back to 2010. Patch made sure the streak ended there by tallying 26 kills on .465 hitting in the five-set thriller. Patch's 181 kills and 3.23 kills per set ranks second on the team behind two-time AVCA All-American Taylor Sander. This is the 21st time an athlete from BYU has taken home Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from Taylor Sander on January 22nd of this year. The Cougars are coached by Chris McGown.
