Berkley Whaley, a sophomore outside hitter for No. 2 University of Tampa, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week. In two doubleheaders played last weekend, the Spartans swept both of them at the West Florida South Region Crossover Tournament led by Whaley's solid all-around play. After a 12-kill, five ace and .611 hitting percentage effort over Christian Brothers, the most difficult match-up of the weekend came later in the day against then-No. 19 and host West Florida. She didn't disappoint, smashing 15 kills and three aces also tallying nine digs and three blocks in the four-set win. In the following victories the next day against North Alabama and Valdosta State, the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week registered a combined 15 kills, 15 digs and three blocks and recorded hitting percentages of .500 and .688, respectively. She also recorded a match-high in points in three of the four matches (18 points vs. Christian Brothers, 19.5 points vs. #19 West Florida, 13.5 points vs. Valdosta State). The is the fifth time a student-athlete from Tampa has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, with the most recent coming from Danielle Selkridge on November 20, 2012. The Spartans are coached by Chris Catanach.
