This was truly an amazing week for the Tigers, winning all three matches against teams ranked in the AVCA Coaches Top-25 Poll, including No. 1 Christopher Newport. Hitting the road to play in the Asics Juniata Classic, they matched up against the ninth-ranked host right off the bat. In the five-set victory, Gilene racked up 30 digs to give head coach Paco Labrador his 300th career victory. However, they didn't spend much time celebrating that accomplishment with No. 1 Christopher Newport up next. Against the Captains, Gilene had another 30 digs in the four-set victory, and followed that up with another 11 to close out the tournament against No. 16 Puget Sound. This is the 10th time an athlete from Wittenberg has earned the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week award, but the first time since September 7, 2010 when Amy Cox garnered the distinction. |
