John La Rusch, a 6-6 freshman opposite for Long Beach State University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. La Rusch put the team on his back in their win over then-No. 1 UCLA in five sets, nailing a career-high 21 kills while hitting .325 and adding five digs. It was just his second start of his young career, but performed late under pressure getting three consecutive kills in the decisive fifth set to give the 49ers a 13-7 lead. His performance earned him a start three days later against then-No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, where he finished with eight kills in two sets played in the four-set victory. For the week, the California native led the team in kills (29), kills per set (4.14) and points per set (4.50). This is the 23rd time a Long Beach State men's volleyball player has been named a Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, and the first for La Rusch. The last time a Niner garnered the award was Josh Riley the week of April 25, 2011. LBSU is coached by Andy Read.
