Lauren Wicinski, a senior outside hitter for No. 9 Michigan State University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. It was one of the biggest weekends for the Spartans (then-No. 15) in recent memory after hitting the road and knocking off then-No. 1 Penn State (3-2) and then-No. 13 Ohio State (3-0) to open Big Ten conference play with a bang. Wicinski was front and center for the upsets, first going into Rec Hall at PSU and leading Michigan State with 21 kills, adding another two aces, nine digs and two blocks. It was just the Nittany Lions' third loss at home since 2006. That next day they headed to Columbus, Ohio to play Ohio State where she continued her strong play, nailing another 12 kills and two aces in the sweep of the previously unbeaten Buckeyes. For her efforts, she was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season and the third of her career. This is the seventh time a student-athlete from Michigan State has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week, with the most recent coming from Nikki Colson on September 22, 2003. The Spartans are coached by Cathy George.
