Luis Vega, a 6-0 sophomore outside hitter for No. 2 Springfield College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week. It was another big week for Vega as the Pride wrapped up their regular season with four more victories last weekend. Vega started off hot against No. 7 Stevens, smashing 21 kills on .581 hitting with seven digs and a pair of blocks. Over the next two matches, the Puerto Rico native played a combined three sets, but made them count. Against Endicott and Marymount, he tallied 16 kills on just 18 attempts setting up their showdown with No. 9 Medaille. The Mavericks already knocked off a No. 1 team earlier this season when they defeated SUNY New Paltz last month. Springfield and Vega certainly didn't take Medaille lightly, as he nailed another 15 kills and recorded four more blocks in the straight set victory.
This is the 24th time in program history a Springfield student-athlete has garnered Sports Imports/Player of the Week honors, and is the second consecutive week Vega takes home the award. The last time a DIII player won consecutive national player of the weeks was Alejando Flores when he accomplished the feat the weeks of April 8th and 15th back in 2002. The Pride is coached by Charlie Sullivan.
