Matt Tarantino, a 6-8 redshirt sophomore middle blocker for No. 4 Pepperdine University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. It was an impressive week for the middle against two teams ranked in the top-7 of last week's AVCA Coaches Poll in then-No. 7 UCLA and then-No. 4 UC Santa Barbara. The MPSF Player of the Week tallied 12 kills while notching a career-high .750 hitting percentage against the Bruins. Defensively, he recorded two digs and five blocks. Then in Santa Barbara three days later, he collected another four blocks and two digs in addition to having another errorless night with 11 kills on .688 hitting. He has put on a strong season for the Waves after missing all of 2013 after undergoing surgery on his arm.
This is the 26th time in program history a Pepperdine student-athlete has garnered Sports Imports/Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from Parker Kalmbach on January 21st of this year. Pepperdine is coached by Marv Dunphy.
