Taylor Hughes, a 6-7 redshirt-senior outside hitter for No. 11 University of the Pacific, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. With the Tigers right in the thick of the MPSF, they ended up splitting the weekend against then-No. 10 UC Santa Barbara and then-No. 4 UCLA. In their five-set victory over the Gauchos, Hughes nailed 25 kills with two aces, nine digs and four blocks. He finished that match carrying them offensively with a .442 hitting percentage, a full .274 higher than the .168 the Tigers hit as a team. The California native followed up that strong performance with another, this time tallying 15 kills and four digs while hitting .600 against the Bruins. Since the second set against Pacific, Hughes racked up 32 kills with just one attack error to finish out the weekend. He completed both matches averaging five kills, 5.75 points, 1.62 digs and 0.75 blocks per set with an even .500 attack percentage. This is the eighth time in program history a Pacific player has garnered Sports Imports/Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming February 2, 2004 when Brian Zodrow took home the honor. The Tigers are coached by Joe Wortmann.
