Tim Ferriter, a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter for No. 3 SUNY New Paltz has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division III National Player of the Week. He helped lead the Hawks to a Springfield Invitational Title by defeating the top two teams in the country on the same day, which was the first time in program history they accomplished that feat. The first dragon to slay was No. 1 Rivier, who they handled in straight sets thanks to Ferriter's 10 kills, .316 hitting percentage and six digs. Later that day they played host No. 2 Springfield, who hadn't lost at home to a Division III school since 2011 and haven't been swept by a D-III program at home since 2006. The Hawks put an end to both of those streaks, sweeping the Pride relying on the sophomore's 17 kills and an astounding .500 hitting percentage with three blocks. His average in those two matches of 4.50 kills and 1.17 digs per set and .422 hitting percentage are above his 3.81, 1.17 and .401 averages for the season against nationally ranked teams. SUNY New Paltz improved to 15-1 on the season and riding an eight -match winning streak.
This is the eighth time in program history a SUNY New Paltz student-athlete has garnered Sports Imports/Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from John Lutjen on April 2, 2013. The Hawks are coached by Radu Petrus.
