Zack La Cavera, a 6-4 junior opposite for then-No. 9 UC Irvine, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week. It was a big week for the two-time defending champs, defeating two top-5 teams in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Against then-No. 5 USC, La Cavera tallied 17 kills, three digs, three blocks and hit .256 in the five-setter. Up next was then-No. 3 Pepperdine where the California native dominated the match from the first serve. In the sweep of the Waves, he matched his 17 kills on .448 hitting with another two aces and as many digs and blocks. He smashed nine kills in the first set and ended the match with one as well. For the week, the junior averaged 4.25 kills and 4.94 points per set while hitting at a .333 clip to propel his Anteaters to a No. 7 spot in yesterday's AVCA Coaches Poll.
This is the 23rd time in program history a UCI student-athlete has garnered Sports Imports/Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from Kyle Russell on April 9th of last year. The Anteaters are coached by David Kniffin.
