Megan Rietema - Calvin College
LEXINGTON, Ky. (November 20, 2013) - Calvin College setter Megan Rietema has been named the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Player of the Year. The award was announced this evening at the NCAA Division III Championship awards banquet in Holland, Mich., which was held in conjunction with the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship, to be held November 21-23 on the campus of Hope College.
Entering the season the now three-time AVCA All-American had high expectations to lead the Knights back to the NCAA National Championship Match, where Calvin will continue to pursue that goal on Thursday against UMass-Boston in the national quarterfinals. This season, she has quarterbacked her offense to a team hitting percentage of .297, which is good for a tie for first place in the country with Springfield College.
Individually, Rietema was the only setter to be ranked in the top-10 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in hitting percentage, checking in at No. 2 attacking at a .341 clip. Teammates Maggie Kamp, Emily Crowe and Laura Danhoff were ranked third-through-fifth thanks to Rietema's setting prowess. She also finished second in the conference averaging 9.77 assists per set.
However, she was more than just a strong offensive threat. Defensively, she is second on the team with 283 digs (2.55 per set) and third in blocks with 71 (0.64 b/s). Rietema was named the Most Outstanding Player of the regional tournament hosted by Calvin last weekend, where they pulled out wins over Penn State-Behrend, Mount Union and Wittenberg, with the last two coming in five sets. In their regional final win over the Tigers, the 6'2' setter just missed a triple-double with 40 assists, 11 digs and nine kills (.350 hitting percentage). She also added five blocks.
Calvin Head Coach Amber Warners has now coached three consecutive national players of the year after sisters Rebecca and Lizzie Kamp each took home the honor in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
