2013 AVCA Division I Region Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The following coaches have been selected by their region as the 2013 AVCA Division I Region Coach of the Year. Each of the honorees will represent their region on the 2013 AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the 2013 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Seattle, Washington on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year
Barry Goldberg, American University
2013 Record: 34-2, 15-1 Patriot League

During Goldberg's 25th season as head coach of the Eagles, he made as history as the first Patriot League team to capture a victory in the NCAA tournament. Ending his regular season with an astounding 34 overall wins and only two losses, American posted a conference record of 15-1. They finished first in Patriot League standings after winning the conference for an eleventh time, and have advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. In the past 17 years, Goldberg's teams have won fourteen conference championships, and have made thirteen NCAA Tournament appearances. He has produced two Academic All-Americans, six Patriot League Players of the Year, and has been named the Patriot League Coach of the year five times, including this year. This is his first time receiving the Region Coach of the Year.

AVCA Division I East Coast Region Coach of the Year
Jolene Nagel, Duke University
2013 Record: 28-5, 15-2 Atlantic Coast Conference

In her 15th season as the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils, she led her team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history. In securing the ACC Championship, Duke trailed by eight points in the fourth set to cross-town rival North Carolina down 2-1, but was able to come back to force a fifth set and an eventual victory. The title marks the Blue Devils' 11th conference crown in program history and first since 2010. Nagel has now guided the Blue Devils to four ACC titles - three outright (2006, 2010, 2013) and one co-championship (2008) - during her 15 years in Durham. Nagel is now a four-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year honoree after winning in 1998 (Georgetown), 2000, 2006 and 2010.

AVCA Division I Midwest Region Coach of the Year
Ray Bechard, University of Kansas
2013 Record:  25-7, 12-4 Big 12 Conference

Ray Bechard has his team in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after defeating Wichita State and Creighton University.  They will play the University of Washington on Friday.  The Jayhawks also finished a program-high second in the Big 12, and finished first in the conference in assists per set (13.61) and second in team hitting percentage (.259).  In his 16th season at the helm of Kansas volleyball, Bechard becomes the only coach in program history to earn Big 12 Coach of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons.  This is also Bechard's second consecutive AVCA Region Coach of the Year.

AVCA Division I North Region Coach of the Year
Hugh McCutcheon, University of Minnesota
2013 Record: 29-6, 15-5 Big Ten Conference

Just two seasons removed from leading the USA Women's National Team to a silver medal, McCutcheon has made a seamless transition into NCAA Big Ten Volleyball. After his inaugural season in Minnesota saw him go 27-8, he followed that up with an equally impressive 29-6 and a third place finish in one of the toughest conferences in the country. They made the program's 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and will play the Pac-12's Stanford University in the Sweet 16 on Friday. McCutcheon has been able to generate tremendous buzz around the program, as evidence by the Gopher's average home attendance of 4,241, including the November 11th match against Penn State that saw the Sports Pavilion host the second-highest volleyball attendance in the venue's history when they drew 5,748 fans. McCutcheon earns AVCA Region Coach of the Year honors for the first time.

AVCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year
Russ Rose, Penn State University
2013 Record: 30-2, 19-1 Big Ten Conference

In his 35th season coaching the Nittany Lions, Rose continues to make history. With what is arguably the most successful program in the country the Lions earned seven Big Ten postseason honors, including Big Ten Setter of the Year in Micha Hancock for the second year in a row. Rose was also awarded the Big Ten Coach of the year for the second consecutive season, making it his impressive 12th win overall. On October 20th, Rose recorded his 1,107th career win against Northwestern, moving him into second place on the Division I wins list. With currently 1,119 wins, Rose is only eight wins short of first in all-time wins at 1,127. Penn State boasted a near perfect record at home, losing just one match to Michigan State on their home court. Another accolade for Rose this season was capturing the top-ranked signing class for the 2014 season. This is the seventh time Rose has been awarded Regional Coach of the Year, to add to his substantial list of other awards, including National Coach of the Year.

AVCA Division I Pacific North Region Coach of the Year
Tom Hilbert, Colorado State Univesrity
2013 Record: 28-2, 19-1 Mountain West Conference

In his time as head coach, Hilbert has led the Rams to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Rams managed a historic 19-1 conference and 28-2 overall record. This was not an easy feat after graduating four players, including AVCA All-American Dana Cranston. Starting their season with a phenomenal 27-match win streak, the Rams broke the program and Mountain West records. CSU set yet another program record with a .933 winning percentage and finished the year tied for fifth-most wins in program history. Although they were unranked in the AVCA Preseason Poll, the Rams spent 12 weeks in a row in the AVCA Top-25 Polls, with a high at number nine. On November 9th, Hilbert won his 600th career match, becoming the 10th coach in Division I history to win this many matches and hold a .770 winning percentage. He also mentored four All-Conference players this season, as well as the Mountain West Player of the Year in Samantha Peters. This is his second time receiving the award for Regional Coach of the Year, and has received Mountain West Coach of the Year nine times as well.

AVCA Division I Pacific South Region Coach of the Year
Jennifer Petrie, University of San Diego
2013 Record: 26-3, 16-2 West Coast Conference

It's been a dream season thus far for the Toreros of San Diego, winning the WCC and advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. They had a handful of preseason wins against AVCA ranked opponents in Hawai'i, Iowa State, Illinois and Southern California and quickly shot up to as high as the No. 2 ranking on September 16th. After beginning the season unranked in the preseason coaches poll, they have maintained a top-10 ranking for 10 weeks. They are currently one of the nation's hottest teams, squaring off against Nebraska on Friday riding a 17-match winning streak. Petrie is now a first-time AVCA Region Coach of the Year honoree.

AVCA Division I South Region Coach of the Year
Edwin Allen, University of Alabama
2013 Record: 24-10, 10-7 Southeastern Conference

In his third season leading the Crimson Tide, Ed Allen has improved every season from his 11-20 overall record in 2011 to a 24-win season in 2013. Alabama finished fourth in the SEC and claimed a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in school history. He coached three players to AVCA All-Region selections led by Krystal Rivers, who led the team in kills (3.57) and placed third in the conference in hitting percentage (.404). Allen earned AVCA Midwest Coach of the Year honors back in 2010 while coaching at Tulsa, making this his second honor.

AVCA Division I Southeast Region Coach of the Year
Wayne Kreklow, University of Missouri
2013 Record: 35-1, 18-0 Southeastern Conference

Coming off a 19-11 overall record and 10-9 in their first year in the SEC, not many knew what to expect of the Tigers heading into 2013. However, Wayne Kreklow was able to lead his squad to the conference's first ever undefeated season winning all 18 matches and 35 consecutive wins dating back to the pre-conference schedule. They set records for wins, conference wins, consecutive wins, consecutive sweeps and wins to open a season. In fact, they were never pushed to a fifth set all season long and won 106 of the 116 total sets played. In his 13th season at the helm of the Tigers, this is his first AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor.

AVCA Division I Southwest Region Coach of the Year
Jerritt Elliott, University of Texas
2013 Record: 25-2, 16-0 Big 12 Conference

In his 13th season as head coach of the Longhorns, Elliott has led his team to an impressive undefeated season in conference play. The team ended their regular season ranked first in the AVCA Coaches Top-25, where they have been ranked number one for seven weeks straight, giving them the number one seed entering the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns also entered the tournament on a 19-game winning streak, and have not lost a match since September. After receiving his 200th Big 12 win this season, Elliott became one of only two coaches with 200 or more conference wins. With a career record of 320-91, Elliott's team has earned their fair share of honors this season. Junior Haley Eckerman received Big 12 Player of the Year Award, while Chiaka Ogbogu received Big 12 Freshman of the Year. The Longhorns also led the All-Big 12 First Team this season with five recipients from Texas. This is the eighth consecutive year the five-time Regional Coach of the Year has taken his team to the NCAA Regional Finals.
