Head Coach, Longmeadow High School
George Mulry has not only been putting together impressive winnings on the court for Longmeadow High School in his first two years there, he has been doing some notable things to advance the sport off the court as well. On the court, the 2007 Lancer team was the first in program history to win a sectional championship and finish undefeated in league play; the 2008 version went back-to-back with their second sectional championship, even after graduating six players from the previous season.
Off the court, Mulry was a finalist for the 2007-08 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award for the work he has done with www.longmeadowvolleyball.com, a Web site dedicated to not only promoting his team and its accomplishments, but also to teaching fans and parents different aspects of the game, such as statistical definitions and referee signals. His team was also a recipient of the 2007-08 AVCA Team Academic Award for academic excellence.
Mulry is also investing in the future of his program and the sport. He and his varsity volleyball players run a middle school volleyball program from September to November twice a week after practice for 40 kids, grades 5-8.
"Receiving the Thirty Under 30 award is a huge honor," Mulry said. "I never expected to receive much recognition coaching at the high school level. We're really trying to advance the sport in Western Massachusetts and this is a really big step to legitimizing what we're doing."
