Associate Head Coach, St. Ambrose University
Even though Jim Finn was still playing college volleyball just three years ago, he already has amassed nearly 200 wins at the collegiate level as an assistant coach. Finn is the associate head coach for the women's team at St. Ambrose University, and has helped lead that squad to 136 wins over the past five seasons. Upon completion of his playing career with the men's team, Finn stayed on as an assistant coach, and has been part of 48 wins the past two seasons, including one conference championship and a top-three finish in the national tournament.
"My love for the sport of volleyball and the idea of inspiring others initially got me involved in coaching," Finn said. "I had a few coaches along the way that showed their passion for coaching and made me look at the position in a different light. It made me realize that coaches can truly make a difference."
Finn, who has already earned his MBA from St. Ambrose, is truly a student of the coaching profession. He lists books by AVCA Hall of Fame mentor Terry Pettit and NFL championship coach Tony Dungy as his favorites. "My (career goal in the sport) would be to show continued improvement throughout my career, whether it is as a head coach or an assistant coach," he said. "I think that if I can show improvement and success at whatever level I am at, then the opportunities to become successful at the next level will present themselves."
