Assistant Coach, UC San Diego
San Diego, CA
NCAA Division II
Jonathan Newman-Gonchar has been an assistant coach with both the men's and women's volleyball programs at UC San Diego for three seasons. The 2009 men's campaign saw the program experience unprecedented success, setting a school record for the most wins in a season, while head coach Kevin Ring was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year. Newman-Gonchar also guided the women's team to a successful year, as the Tritons advanced to the NCAA Division I West Region semifinals, secured the second-most wins in school history (29) and put three athletes on AVCA Division II All-America teams.
When asked what influenced his decision to begin coaching volleyball, Newman-Gonchar replied, "Plain and simple, I am infatuated by the energy and excitement that is attached to volleyball. There aren't many careers out there that even come close to providing the exhilaration that I am fortunate to experience every time I enter the gym, whether it is to assist in a practice, to observe a recruit or to coach on game night. With each season, a new team brings a new spirit, new challenges and new opportunities. It is because of these experiences that coaching volleyball is, for me, an obvious career choice.
"Presently, I am situated in a fantastic place professionally, personally, and, even, geographically. I work alongside two tremendously successful coaches and experience the sport from both the women's and men's side of the game. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to witness volleyball at a high level of play in Southern California. Yet, when I am ready and the right opportunity comes my way, I can see myself as a head coach someday, taking on the challenge of turning around a program that has not achieved its desired goals. It is my career aspiration to prepare such a team to compete on the national stage playing at a level beyond anyone's expectation.
