Head Coach, Belmont Abbey College
NCAA Division II
As head coach at Belmont Abbey College for three seasons, Lettie Wilkes continues the volleyball tradition in her family.
"What made me decide to get into coaching volleyball is from the passion and love I have had for the game from a very young age," she said. "... I had the pleasure of being introduced to the game from my talented older sister who played the game, as well as my mom, who was a physical educator who coached the game."
After graduating from Catawba College, where she earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior and senior at setter, she eventually became head coach at Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, N.C. from 2003 to 2005. There, she led the Tigers to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state title in 2003 and 2005, and was also named Charlotte Observer Coach of the Year in 2003.
In addition, she coached at the Player's Edge Volleyball Club from 2006 to 2008.
Wilkes continues to work hard to learn the game, which she will help her improve her coaching and, ultimately, improve her team's success.
"As my career has started in the collegiate coaching atmosphere, I would like to continue to better myself and absorb as much knowledge as I can," she said. "By gaining more knowledge and learning form others who have been successful coaches, it will guide me to better myself and implement (what I've learned) into my instruction and teaching of these collegiate players."
