Assistant Coach, Metropolitan State College of Denver
Denver, CO
NCAA Division II
Lisa Axel has spent the past four seasons as assistant women's volleyball coach at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Metro State had one of its best seasons in 2009, with two postseason wins over top-15 teams, the most in program history. Axel helped the Roadrunners advance to the Central Region championship, and was part of their accomplishment as one of just seven NCAA Division II schools to reach the NCAA Tournament in every year last decade.
As a player, Axel was a libero and defensive specialist at the University of Minnesota from 1999-2002. She was a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection as the Golden Gophers went 108-32 record during her career. It was during her playing career that Axel decided to join the coaching profession.
"I knew when I was done playing that I wanted to coach and stay connected with the sport," said Axel. "My college coach Mike Hebert was very helpful in getting me started in coaching at the college level."
