Assistant Coach, Cornerstone University
Grand Rapids, MI
Ryan Campbell has been the assistant coach at Cornerstone University for three seasons now, and his enthusiasm for coaching the sport continues to grow, thanks in part to the Golden Eagles' head coach, Steve Burmaster.
"In high school, I played boys' volleyball in Illinois," he explained. "When I went to college, I still had an interest in volleyball, but never thought much about coaching. Then I met Steve Burmaster, who demonstrated how fun coaching can be and sparked my interest in coaching volleyball. His love of the sport transformed me from a volleyball player to a volleyball coach."
For his part, Burmaster, who nominated Campbell for this award, believes his young assistant has the qualities that will make him a very successful coach in the sport.
"Ryan is a person of integrity, strong moral character, (and is) responsible and energetic," Burmaster said. "He is a very dynamic coach that not only works with his players to make them better on the court, but also is a very caring individual that has a great repoire with his players off the court."
Campbell's ultimate goal is not only to become a head coach someday, but make it a success in the community.
"I want to develop a collegiate program that the community wants to watch and support," he said. "No matter what level of volleyball, I want to create a volleyball atmosphere that is fun and exciting for all the people - players, parents, fans - the entire community."
