Assistant Coach, University of San Diego
San Diego, CA
NCAA Division I
In just her third season as assistant coach at the University of San Diego, Stephanie Moreno helped guide the Toreros to a 23-5 record, its third consecutive West Coast Conference championship and the school's ninth trip into the NCAA Tournament. In addition, San Diego finished the season ranked No. 19 in the Bison/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll.
Moreno, a 2002 graduate of San Diego, came back to her alma mater to coach in 2006 after beginning her collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Cal State Fullerton in 2005, and as an assistant at Menlo College in 2003 and 2004. She also had stints as a head coach at Menlo Middle School and Menlo High School.
"The sport has been such a big part of my life since I was in fourth grade, it was natural for me to start coaching at a middle school and high school (Menlo) near my hometown when I moved back after graduating from San Diego," she said. "The two campuses are also connected to an NAIA campus, Menlo College. The head coach there, Bill Imwalle, needed an assistant coach and saw me with the high school team and asked if I was interested. I went to a spring practice and decided to coach there in the fall."
The rest, as they say, is history, as the enjoyment and personal fulfillment she achieved in that coaching position helped her decide to continue in the profession at the collegiate level.
