Head Coach, Mercy Academy
Todd Garvey just completed his ninth season at Mercy Academy in Louisville, Ky., seven as head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach, and the last two as head varsity coach. It's what he's accomplished his two seasons as varsity coach that illustrates why he's one of the up-and-coming coaches in the sport.
Last season, his first as head coach, he guided the team to a 38-4 record, a No. 2 ranking in the state of Kentucky and one of the final four teams in the state championships. This year his squad went one better, finishing with a 40-1 record and winning the state title.
Garvey, who was named 2008 AVCA National High School Coach of the Year, got into coaching because of his love for the sport, which he learned from his father.
"My dad has been a long-time coach in volleyball in Louisville for over 25 years," he said. "I've been around volleyball my whole life because of my dad. I fell in love with the sport and started playing in high school at St. Xavier (Louisville) and went on to play for the University of Kentucky's men's (club) team. I stared coaching under my dad at Mercy in 1999 and have been coaching ever since."
Having accomplished his main goal coming into this 2008 season - winning a state championship - what's next for Garvey in the sport?
"I just want to continue to develop as a coach and take it one year at a time," he said.
