Destinee Hooker, a sophomore outside hitter for No. 7 Texas, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week for her play in helping the Longhorns defeat two strong conference opponents in last week's action. In her team’s 3-1 win over Texas Tech, Hooker had a team-best 21 kills in 38 attempts and only two errors for a .500 hitting percentage. She also chipped in four digs and eight total blocks to her team’s winning effort. She followed that up with 17 kills, seven digs, two aces and one total block in the Longhorns’ 3-1 win over Colorado. For the week, Hooker hit a solid .431, and averaged 5.43 kills, 1.57 digs, 1.29 blocks and 6.57 points per game in helping lead her team to an 8-3 overall record and 4-1 in the Big 12. Hooker’s honor marks the fourth time an athlete from Texas has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. The previous Longhorn to earn the honor was Michelle Moriarty on August 28, 2006. Texas is coached by Jerritt Elliott, one of the speakers at this year's AVCA Annual Convention in Sacramento, Calif. in December.
