COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN IDAHO’S STEPHANIE MARTIN NAMED 2000 AVCA JC/CC NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce that the College of Southern Idaho's Stephanie Martin, a 6-3 middle blocker from Mesa, Ariz., has been selected as the 2000 AVCA Junior College/Community College National Player of the Year.

Martin, who prepped at Westwood High School in Mesa, Ariz., paced the Golden Eagles to a 45-5 record and to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I title with a 3-1 win over Miami-Dade Community College in the championship match. Southern Idaho now has won seven national championships in the last eight years. For her efforts during the national tournament, Martin was honored as the NJCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Martin tallied 382 kills (2.63 kills per game) with a .377 attack percentage over 145 games played. She tacked on 233 total blocks (1.61 blocks per game), 79 service aces (0.54 service aces per game) and 317 digs (2.19 digs per game).

The formal presentation of the 2000 AVCA National Player of the Year award will be made Dec. 15, 2000, in Richmond, Va., at the AVCA All-America/Player of the Year banquet, beginning at 11 a.m.  The banquet, which will take place at the Richmond Marriott Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 2000 AVCA National Convention and NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
