JC/CC National Coach of the Year
Colorado Springs, Colo. - Tachikara
and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) are pleased to announce
that Kirkwood Community College's Doug Van Oort has been selected the 1996
Tachikara/AVCA JC/CC National Coach of the Year.
Van Oort guided the Eagles, in just their
first year with a volleyball program, to the Region 11 tournament championship,
advancing to the NJCAA national tournament after defeating Region 13 winner
Bismark State. The team went 1-2 at the national tournament.
This year the Eagles claimed second place
at the DuPage tournament and won titles at the Southwestern and Southeastern
invitationals. Kirkwood's roster featured all freshmen this season.
The squad earned its first-ever NJCAA national ranking, finishing the year
at No. 14.
Tachikara will formally present the Coach
of the Year awards on Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, in Cleveland, Ohio.
The luncheon, which will begin at 12:30p.m. at the Renaissance Cleveland
Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 1996 AVCA National Convention.
