Idaho's Fabiana Abreu Named 1998 AVCA JC/CC Player of the Year

- The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce
that College of Southern Idaho’s Fabiana Abreu has been selected as the
1998 AVCA National Player of the Year for JC/CC.
Abreu, a freshman outside hitter/setter,
led the College of Southern Idaho to a 59-0 overall record this season
and its sixth straight NJCAA national championship. She was named
the tournament MVP at the national tournament and the Utah Valley State
Invitational. CSI also claimed the McHenry Classic, the Applebees
College of Southern Idaho Invitational and posted an undefeated record
at the Valley of the Sun Tournament.
Abreu contributed 816 assists, 543 kills,
225 digs, 115 blocks, 82 aces and a .402 hitting percentage. Her
season high in hitting percentage came in a two-game win over California
Community College champion Golden West, where she had nine kills with no
errors on 10 attempts. She posted three triple-doubles this season,
including season highs of 34 assists, 20 kills and 11 digs against Utah
Valley State College. In the national championship match against
Miami-Dade, she pounded 14 kills, along with 20 assists and nine digs.
Southern Idaho has posted a 380-1 record
over the last six seasons, and has won the most consecutive NJCAA national
championships (six). Dating back to last season, the Golden Eagles
have captured 90 consecutive matches.
The formal presentation of awards to the
1998 AVCA National Players of the Year will be made Dec. 18, 1998, in Madison,
Wis., at the AVCA Player of the Year/All-America brunch beginning at 9:30
a.m. The brunch, which will take place at the Marriott Madison West,
is held in conjunction with the 1998 AVCA National Convention.
