2001 Tachikara/AVCA JC/CC Region Coaches of the Year

Colorado Springs, Colo. – The following coaches have been selected by their region as Tachikara/AVCA Region Coach of the Year.  Two coaches from each region have been honored.  Each of the honorees will represent their region on the Tachikara/AVCA National Junior/Community College Coach of the Year ballot.  The awards will be officially presented at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year banquet in San Diego on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Convention.

Northeast/Southeast Region Coaches of the Year
Roger Majeski - Genesee Community College (New York)
2001 Record: 44-19, 12-0 Conference (1st)
Roger Majeski has once again overcome many adversities and turned his team around to compete at the national championships. The squad featured one full-time starter, two situation players and nine incoming freshmen. With the help and instruction of Coach Majeski, the team overcame the loss of veteran leadership and crucial experience to complete its season with a seventh-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II championships.

Ilida Medero - Miami-Dade Community College (Florida)
2001 Record: 32-2
Medero led Miami-Dade to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Tournament national championships with a 32-2 overall record, including a 30-21, 28-30, 30-17, 30-12 victory over Lee College (Texas) in the championship match. Medero, the Coach of the Tournament, won the national title without the aid of a single AVCA JC/CC All-American. However, two members of the Miami-Dade team earned spots on the NJCAA Division I All-Tournament Team.

Midwest Region Coaches of the Year
Kirsten Booth - Kirkwood Community College (Iowa)
2001 Record: 33-15, 21-2 Conference (1st)
Coach Booth guided her team to the national finals in her first year at Kirkwood in 2000. She returned Kirkwood to the national tournament this year with a fourth-place finish. Kirkwood won the Region XI championship.

Wayne King - Kishwaukee College (Illinois)
2001 Record: 46-3
Bio Comments: Coach King led Kishwaukee College to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national championship. He Has been head coach at Kish for four years with 182-19 overall record. He is ery involved in club ball and brings in kids from other states to a community college.

Southwest Region Coaches of the Year
Tracie Johnson - Lee College (Texas)
2001 Record: 47-1
Johnson led Lee College (Texas) to a 47-1 record and National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Tournament runner-up. The only blemish on Lee’s record was a four-game loss to national champion Miami-Dade in the national title match.

Mary Ann Paz - San Joaquin Delta (California)
2001 Record: 26-2
Mary Ann Paz led San Joaquin Delta to a third-place finish in the California Community College Volleyball Championship Tournament after going through the regular season undefeated. San Joaquin entered the post-season tournament with a 23-0 record. Last season, Paz led San Joaquin to a 24-3 record and third-place medal in the CCC Tournament.

West Region Coaches of the Year
Irene Matlock - Spokane Falls Community College (Washington)
2001 Record: 43-9
Spokane, behind the coaching of Irene Matlock, won three tournaments this season. Spokane also has a second and third place finish at a Division III tournament. Three of Spokane's losses have come against Division III schools. Spokane entered its conference tournament as the number-one seed. They completed their league play with a 10-0 record. The team placed fifth in the 2000 conference tournament. Coach Matlock is on several committees for the AVCA and serves as Athletic Commissioner for the NWAAC. She is a committee member for volleyball in the NWACC and is the Eastern Region volleyball chairperson. Coach Matlock reached her 600th community college win this season and her 700th career win.

JoAnn Reeve – BYU-Idaho (formerly Ricks College)
2001 Record: 32-14
BYU-Idaho’s season ended against Southern Idaho in the Region 18 Tournament, but JoAnn Reeve’s team still produced a 32-14 overall record. Reeve concluded her 27th season with a career record of 909-283 (77 percent). She was inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998.
