2004 Tachikara/AVCA Two-Year College Region
Coaches of the Year for Women's Volleyball Announced
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The following coaches have been selected by their
region as Tachikara/AVCA Two-Year College Region Coach of the Year. Each of the
honorees will represent their region on the National Coach of the Year ballot.
The awards will be officially presented at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year
and Victory Club Awards banquet in Long Beach, Calif., on Thursday, Dec. 16, at
the American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

Midwest Region Coaches of the Year
Terry Carlson, Indian Hills Community College
2004 Record: 41-3
Indian Hills finished third at its school’s first trip to the NJCAA Division I
tournament after losing to national runner-up Salt Lake Community College in the
semifinals. Indian Hills defeated Western Nebraska Community College in the
consolation match. Sophomore Philister Sang was the program’s first NJCAA
Division I All-American in school history.
Benjamin Staupe, Rock Valley College
2004 Record: 30-4
Rock Valley College finished first in Region IV and second in the NJCAA
Division III Championships to Nassau Community College. Rock Valley also posted
a first-place ranking on the final NJCAA Division III regular season poll. Rock
Valley had a 12-2 record against NJCAA Division II teams.

Northeast/Southeast Region Coaches of the Year
Ilida Medero, Miami-Dade Community
College 2004 Record: 32-0
Miami-Dade Community College won the 2004 NJCAA Division I
National Championship after beating Salt Lake Community College in four games.
In her 17th season with Miami-Dade, Medero has appeared in the NJCAA
Championships 15 consecutive times. The Sharks have now won six championships
and five runner-up titles. Her coaching record is 552-64 (.896 winning
percentage).
Chuck Schilling, Nassau Community
College
2004 Record: 32-4
Nassau Community College was undefeated in the
Region XV regular season. The team had three Region XV first-team players, one
honorable mention, Region XV Tournament MVP, and one NJCAA Honorable Mention All
American. Schilling was selected Region XV Coach of the Year and District F
Coach of the Year. Coach Schilling has an overall record at Nassau CC of 290 –
105.

Southwest Region Coaches of the Year
Kanoe Bandy, Taft College 2004 Record:
23-3
Taft College was the Central Valley Conference Champions for the second
consecutive year posting a 15-1 record in conference play. The Cougars first
visit to the state championships ended with a fourth-place showing after falling
to San Diego Mesa in four games.
Albert
Gasparian, Golden West College
2004 Record: 25-1
The Golden West Rustlers finished the season as Orange Empire Conference
Champions and were seeded second behind El Camino College, which finished the
regular season undefeated. To date, they have beaten the third and fourth-ranked
teams three straight. After beating San Diego Mesa in the 2004 California State
Championships title game, Golden West has a record of 12 consecutive and 14 out
of the last 15 California State Championships.
Tachikara/AVCA West Region Coaches of the Year
Irene Matlock, Spokane Falls Community College
2004 Record: 28-15
Spokane Falls Community College finished first in the Eastern Region and fifth
at the NWAACC Conference Tournament. Spokane lost to Clackamas, the NWAACC
Champions, in the quarterfinals. Matlock achieved her 700th-career victory
against Skagit Valley on Oct. 1, 2004.
Shay Clemensen, Salt Lake Community College
2004 Record: 43-7
Clemensen coached Salt Lake Community College to a Scenic West Athletic
Conference Championship, Region 18b Championship, District Championship against
Arizona Western in Yuma and NJCAA Division I national runner-up finish against
Miami-Dade Community College.
