Tom
Maving, a 6-1 outside hitter for then-No. 9 Nazareth, has been named the
Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men’s National Player of the Week. The
senior athlete earned the honor after leading the Golden Flyers to a 4-1
record last week, which included capturing the Stevens Invitational title
and scoring upsets over two nationally-ranked teams. In Nazareth's opening
match of the week, a five game loss to Division II East Stroudsburg, Maving
led his team with 20 kills, one ace and six digs. Next, he was asked to play
libero in the first match at the Stevens tournament and picked up 11 digs in
the 3-2 win over Baruch. In the Golden Flyers’ next match, a 3-2 upset over
then-No. 5 Stevens, he scored 13 kills, two aces, five digs and three total
blocks. He followed that up with 17 kills, eight digs and three total blocks
in Nazareth's 3-1 win over then-No. 7 MIT. He closed out the week playing
his best in the tournament championship, a 3-1 victory, and the second win
in two days over Stevens. In the match, he put away 25 kills in 41 attempts
with only three errors for a .537 hitting percentage, while also getting
three digs and a block. For the five-match stretch last week, Maving hit
.403, while averaging 3.26 kills, 1.43 digs and 3.70 points per game. Maving
is the only player from Nazareth to be named Sports Imports/AVCA Division
III Men's National Player of the Week award. He has now earned the award
three times in his career; the last two came on February 12 and March 5 of
2007. Nazareth is coached by Cal WIckens.
