Jonathan Wintermeyer, a 6-6 middle blocker for then-No. 3 New York
University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men’s
National Player of the Week. Wintermeyer earned the honor for his
consistent, all-around play last week against two Division II opponents, and
an upset of Division III’s then-No. 1 Juniata. In the Violets’ sweep of
Division II New Haven, Wintermeyer hit .500 on 12 kills in 20 attempts with
only two errors, while tallying eight blocks, one dig and one ace in the
contest. In NYU’s upset of top-ranked Juniata, he hit an incredible .789 on
15 kills in 19 attempts and zero errors, adding six blocks and two aces.
The victory was the Violets’ first over the Eagles since April 6, 2002.
While his team’s third match of the week was a tough four-game loss to
Division II New Jersey Institute of Technology, Wintermeyer still came up
strong, putting away 11 kills while hitting .368 and earning three blocks in
the match. For the week, the senior hit at a .552 clip, while averaging
nearly 3.8 kills, 1.7 blocks and 5.05 points per game. Wintermeyer is the
17th player from NYU to earn the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's
National Player of the Week award, and the third Violet to earn the award
this year. It is also the second time in his career that he has earned the
honor, with the previous time being January 23, 2006. The Violets are
coached by Jose Pina.
