Evan Romero, a 6-6 right-side/opposite for then-No. 9 Stanford University,
has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player
of the Week. He earned the award after helping the Cardinal to three wins
last week, including back-to-back wins over Hawai’i. In the first match
against Hawai’i, Romero put away 29 kills and added nine digs in the 3-2
victory, while in the second match, a sweep of the Rainbow Warriors, he hit
at an impressive. .692 on a 20-kill performance. Romero finished out his
week in a sweep over Division III power UC Santa Cruz, in which he tallied
eight kills in the two games he played. For the week, Romero hit .421 and
averaged 5.70 kills per game. This is the sixth time a player from Stanford
University has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National
Player of the Week. The last Cardinal to earn the honor was Curt Toppel on
January 27, 2003. Stanford is coached by John Kosty.
