Jason
Spangler, a 6-3 outside hitter for unranked UC San Diego, has been named the
Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week.
Spangler earned the award for his strong play in helping the Tritons to two
back-to-back upsets last week over then No. 8 UCLA and then-No. 9 UC Irvine. In the 3-2 win over UCLA, Spangler put
away 30 kills in the contest, while also getting five digs, two blocks and
one ace. He followed that up by hitting .439 on 24 kills in 41 attempts and
six errors in the 3-2 win over the defending national champion Anteaters. He
also chipped in nine digs and three blocks in the match. For the week,
Spangler hit at a .356 clip, while averaging 5.40 kills, 1.40 digs and 5.85
points per game. Spangler is only the second athlete from UC San Diego to be
named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week.
The last Triton to earn the honor was Donald Chen on March 20, 2000. UC San
Diego is coached by Kevin Ring.
