Paul Carroll, a 6-7 right side/opposite for then-No. 5 Pepperdine
University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's
National Player of the Week. He earned the award for leading Pepperdine to a
crucial win over then-No. 6 UCLA on the road, 3-1, in the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation quarterfinals this past weekend. Carroll, who was injured
in the Waves’ two losses to the Bruins during the regular season, made the
difference in this elimination match. He scored his first double-double of
the season, and the seventh of his career, when it counted with 29 kills and
11 digs. He also added four aces and five blocks to his team’s totals in the
victory. His averages in the Waves’ only match of the week were an
impressive 7.25 kills – nearly 40 percent of Pepperdine’s total (29 of 73) –
2.75 digs, 1.25 blocks, one ace and 7.20 points per game. This is the 18th time a player from Pepperdine has been named
the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. The
Waves are coached by Marv Dunphy.
