Sophomore Raquel Ferreira
Named AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is
pleased to announce Concordia University Irvine sophomore outside hitter Raquel
Ferreira as its 2004 AVCA NAIA National Player of the Year.
Ferreira
was instrumental in leading Concordia to a second-place finish in the 2004 NAIA
Volleyball National Championship, in which she captured the tournament's most
valuable player award. She became the first-ever member of the Eagle 500-500
club with 677 kills and 526 digs in 2004. Ferreira averaged 5.46 kills, 4.24
digs, 0.56 blocks and 0.89 aces per game as Concordia finished the season 34-6.
She tallied a .363 hitting percentage over the course of the season, which set a
an all-time school record. Ferreira is the first Eagle to earn AVCA NAIA
All-America First-Team honors in volleyball and is the first NAIA Player of the
Year for Concordia in any sport.
The formal presentation of the award to the 2004 AVCA National Players of the
Year will be made Dec. 17 in Long Beach, Calif., at the AVCA All-America/Players
of the Year banquet. The banquet, which will take place at the Long Beach Westin
Hotel, is held in conjunction with the 2004 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA
Division I Women's Volleyball National Championship.
