Jackie Williams, a junior
right-side hitter for No. 2 Wittenberg University, has been named the Sports
Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She earned the award
after helping lead the Tigers to an undefeated weekend at the Washington
University (Mo.) Invitational, where the team defeated four teams, three of
them nationally ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll. In
Wittenberg's first match, a sweep of No. 12 Concordia (Minn.), Williams had
15 kills in 22 swings and no errors for a .682 hitting percentage, while
also adding six digs and five total blocks in the win. In the Tigers’ next
match, a 3-1 win over Central (Iowa), she put away 11 kills, while adding
two digs and two total blocks. All of that led up to the Tigers’ 3-1 win
over No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis, which marked the first time
Wittenberg has defeated the Bears since 2002. In the match against Wash U.,
Williams scored 16 kills in 32 attempts and only two errors for a .438
hitting percentage. She also chipped in four digs and four total blocks in
the victory. Williams closed out the weekend with a 14 kill, .522 hitting
percentage, two dig performance in Wittenberg's sweep of No. 15 Ohio
Northern. For the week, Williams averaged a .475 hitting percentage, 4.3
kills, .846 blocks and 4.8 points per game. This marks the eighth time an
athlete from Wittenberg has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division III
National Player of the Week, and the first since Emily Bell received the
award on Oct. 16, 2006. The Tigers are coached by Paco Labrador.
