2013 NAIA National Player of the Week
By Chad Waller, Director of Communications and Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Carla Cantarella of Vanguard (Calif.) has been named the NAIA Volleyball National Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Cantarella was selected based on her performances from Nov. 4 - Nov. 10 and was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 23 conferences and independents.
Cantarella, a 5-foot-5 sophomore defensive specialist-turned setter, played a pivotal role in Vanguard's two wins last week. Playing in a 6-2 offensive rotation, which means she splits equal time at setter, Cantarella finished with 27 assists and 18 digs in the 3-2 win (23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10) against No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) on Nov. 5. The loss was a first in Golden State Athletic Conference play in the last three years for Concordia. The native of Huntington Beach, Calif., compiled her third double-double of the year with 20 assists and 10 digs in a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) on Nov. 9, when she again split time with freshman teammate Myranda Cunningham. In two matches, she averaged 5.88 assists per set, 3.50 digs and had no reception errors.
This is the final national Player of the Week for 2013 volleyball season.
