When proceeding
through the AVCA Legislative Operating Code, there are two formal votes that are
recorded, the preliminary vote and the final vote. The following procedures will
be applied when counting the votes:
The process requires a quorum total of 17 of 32 representatives on the
teleconference for a valid vote.
NOTE: If a representative knows he/she will not be able to participate on the
teleconference, he/she has the option to cast the conference vote to the
divisional chairperson via email or phone call PRIOR to the teleconference vote.
Absent votes will not be counted in the vote total.
A vote "in favor" of the issue means that a majority of the conference is in
favor of the change. (This would be counted as a yes.)
A vote "opposed to" the issue means that a majority of the conference is
opposed to the change. (This would be counted as a no.)
A vote of "abstain" means that the conference was evenly split on the issue.
Abstentions mean the conference is voting .5 in support of the change and .5
opposed to the change.
NOTE: Mathematically splitting the abstention better represents what has been
voted on by the conference.
A two-thirds vote is required the organization to develop an official position
on the issue. This would mean two-thirds of the votes cast, which would EXCLUDE
absent votes.
